Coffee Brewing Basics for Hot or Cold Beverages

Posted on

How do you take your coffee? With so many ways to prepare and brew coffee out there, you may wonder, "Which is best?". Above all, the most important thing to start with is a good quality blend of coffee. Here we have two ways to achieve the ideal flavor in your quality cup of coffee with these simple yet effective Coffee Brewing Basics.

Do you enjoy your coffee black? Or perhaps with milk in the form of a cafe au lait? Well, arguably one of the best methods to start with to achieve a perfect flavor balance in these warm, aromatic beverages is the French press method. You will need:

  • A French press
  • Heated water
  • Coffee grounds

Just three ingredients, but how you will use them is the key to unlocking the flavor and strength you desire! Simply add the coffee grounds to the French press, then add heated water. Steep for about 5 minutes if you would like a medium balance of caffeine and flavor. However, steeping longer will result in a higher caffeine content and richer flavor, and steeping for a slightly shorter period of time will, of course, result in a somewhat milder flavor and lower caffeine content. Lastly, push down the strainer and pour. Your fresh, flavorful and aromatic cup of coffee is now ready!

Do you prefer your coffee iced? Many of us do, especially on a hot summer day! So how can you give your coffee that perfect, mild, slightly sweet taste we all enjoy in our cold cafe beverages? Cold brewed coffee is the answer, and anyone can make it at home. All you will need is:

  • A large container
  • Coffee grounds (preferably coarsely ground)
  • Water

Using a large container (like a pitcher or mason jar), pour in coffee grounds and water using about a 1:8 ratio of coffee grounds to water. Next, stir the mixture and let it soak for about 14-24 hours. This is quite a relatively long time to wait, so while you already have one batch prepared you could start soaking another to save time. After the grounds have soaked, strain them out of the water using a sieve and finally you can enjoy a delicious glass of fresh cold brewed coffee. You can add milk or cream if you like, blend with ice and milk to make a refreshing frappé, or drink it just as it is!
