Coffee Brewing Basics -- Get the Best Brew out of Your French Press

Posted on

Check Your Grind

The first rule of French press brewing is to use a coarse grind. Coffee grounds that are too fine could end up in your brew resulting in cloudy coffee and a sludge-like residue in the bottom of your cup. Not only does the coarse grind keep the grounds out of your coffee, it also ensures the flavor remains rich and smooth.

Don’t be Afraid to Mess with the Measurements

It’s a common question: How much coffee do I use? You can run a simple a google search to learn what the recommended coffee-to-water ratio is. Half an ounce of coffee per 6 oz of water is the suggested ratio from Green Dragon Roasters but it is important to keep in mind that everyone’s flavor preferences are different. Don’t be afraid to stray from the recommended ratio if your coffee is too strong or too weak; use it as a starting point and tweak it until you favor the flavor.

Don’t Let the Grounds Float

It’s a fact of life: coffee grounds float on water; letting them stay afloat is going to lower the quality of the brew. When the grounds remain at the top of the water during the steeping process, they are not being fully immersed. You can fix this by pouring a small amount of water over the grounds to start and letting it sit for about 30 seconds before adding the rest of the water. If that doesn’t work, you can also stir the coffee about a minute into the brewing process, forcing the grounds back down into the water.

Plunge with Patience

It’s hard to resist that first sip and the anticipation might be killing you but it is important that you don’t over-agitate the coffee grounds at the end of the brewing process. For best results, you should push the plunger down slowly. Pushing the plunger all the way to the bottom halts the brewing process.
