Coffee Brewing Basics: How to Brew a Perfect Cup of Coffee

Posted on

Coffee is an excellent drink that is delicious and energizing. It is not difficult to see why so many people are addicted to coffee and spend so much money getting high quality coffee to go from cafes and coffee shops. But this can be very expensive and it is not practical for most of us. Luckily, it is possible to make that perfect cup of coffee at home.

Before you learn how to make cafe au laits and macchiatos, you need to learn the coffee brewing basics. Here is how to make the perfect cup of plain, black coffee.

What you need:

  • french press or drip coffee maker
  • bottled or filtered water
  • fresh grounds

I prefer using a french press myself. It's simple to use and has a great taste, even for individual cups of coffee. It is also the least wasteful way to make coffee because it does not need a filter like a drip coffee maker does.

Bottled or filtered water will give a better taste than plain tap water, which usually carries an aftertaste from metals and minerals that find their way into the water supply.

When picking out grounds, make sure you choose the right type. For a french press you want coarsely ground coffee grounds opposed to fine ground for drip coffee.

Use 5 tablespoons of coffee for every 16 ounces of water. If you are using a french press, put the coffee in the bottom of the press while you heat the water separately.

For drip coffee put the grounds in a clean, dust-free coffee filter. Pour the cold water into the water compartment and turn the coffee maker on. Brew time should be 3 to 5 minutes. Pour into a mug and enjoy hot.

For a french press, add the heated water to the grounds and put the cover on for 3 to 5 minutes before pushing the press down. Pour into a mug and enjoy.
